The Ford Explorer... As Seen By a Kid

I have always wanted my older son to start making videos.  The technology now makes it so easy for anyone to create content and get it out there for the world to see.  A few weeks ago he made a movie about how boring a car trip can be and how "exciting" it was to be looking at trees from the back seat of the car.

When we went on our road trip to Canton as part of our #DaddysFordJourney thanks to the fine folks at The Tri-State Ford Dealers I thought it would be a great idea for him to showcase the Ford Explorer that we were driving.  Who knows?  Maybe this can be part of their next big advertising campaign?

It's interesting to see how a kid sees the world around him.

Daddy's Ford Journey to the Pro Football Hall of Fame

My wife is not a football fan.  Sure she likes to watch our seven year old Carter play, but she has no idea who any of the players are (aside from the obvious ones like Tom Brady) and certainly has no clue about who is in the Hall of Fame. Lynn Swann could be Gale Sayers for all she knew.  Or Dan Marino could be Joe Montana.  The point is, football is not her thing... at least it wasn't anyway.

I was approached by the Tri-State Ford Dealers to drive out to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio with my family.  Since the Giants are one of our local teams and Michael Strahan was getting enshrined this year they wanted me of all people to cover it for them.  Now I am an admitted Bills fan (I used to be a Steelers fan and a Dolphins fan before I realized that I should be rooting for the local team from where I grew up) but I would never let that get in the way of my fairly covering a player for the Giants.  Strahan is one of the best defensive linemen in the history of the game and deserving of this honor.  So it was off the Canton we went.

I had no idea what to expect when the car came and was excited to see my very own hashtag on the rear bumper.  Of course with a hashtag on the rear bumper comes great responsibility.  There would be no speeding and reckless driving of any kind (not that there would be of course) on this trip.

We got a late start due to the fact that my wife had to work late.  It explains why she is so dressed up and I look like a slob.  This worked out OK though as we wanted to get at least a little bit of driving done so we didn't have to tackle the entire eight hour day in one shot.  Of course when you start out TOO late, everyone falls asleep in about an hour and it's up to you to find a hotel at 2:00 in the morning.  Thankfully I had the Fords navigation system to keep me company and it found me a hotel outside of Hazelton, PA for us to spend the night.

Day two was all about getting to Canton.  There would be no stops along the way... at least planned stops anyway.  It's my opinion that, for the most part, any road trip is about the destination and not so much the journey.  When you have been on as many trips as I have, you understand where I am coming from.  Of course you do have to stop sometimes... the kids have to eat after all.

We stopped at a truck stop that if I had too rate it, I would give it a negative two.  There was a funk to it, but the bathrooms were somewhat clean.  The sandwiches were moldy and the candy was hard as a rock. Needless to say, this must not be a very busy truck stop.  We filled up with gas and I noticed a very cool feature with the Ford Explorer that I hadn't seen before.

Of course we forget to get Carter a package of Skittles so ANOTHER emergency stop was in order.  The boy loves his candy more than life itself.

I know that you are thinking we could have held off and just not let him have the Skittles, but seriously who wants to put up with that kid of screaming when we didn't know how much longer it was going to take.

This leads me to an observation... Pennsylvania is the widest state that I have ever driven across.  It absolutely took forever.  It was beautiful with it's rolling hills and rivers that you would cross every few miles it seemed, but I have never looked forward to a sign like this one as I did on that drive.

SO LONG PENNSYLVANIA
Of course arriving in Ohio still meant that we had another two hours to go until we arrived in Canton.  I like driving, but this was getting ridiculous and the boys were getting antsy. Any future plans that I had to take the boys on a long road trip are now out the window.  I am NOT looking forward to our drive to Chicago at the end of the summer.

With all that being said, the weekend more than made up for how long the drive took.  We were at our hotel for about 10 minutes and we ran into this guy in the elevator.

Steelers great Lynn Swann

It's crazy to think that we were sharing our hotel with one of the greatest receivers to ever play football.  When I was a kid Carter's age, he was my guy.  Whenever I was playing catch I WAS Lynn Swann and now I am sharing an elevator with him.  Certainly this was a sign of things to come.

I had never been to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. It's always been a place that I wanted to go.  I am a fan of the past and of the players that time has forgotten about.  In order to appreciate today's game, I think it's important to know a little history of the game and the players that paved the way.  I love that my boys share that same passion.

Of course you couldn't pick a better weekend to visit that Hall than Enshrinement Weekend.  History is on display all over the grounds of the Hall of Fame, inside and out.

There is something about seeing the old jerseys.  They don't look as generic as today's do.  You can almost sense that there was some old lady who cut out the numbers herself and hand stitched every single one of them.

While this was a GREAT weekend to visit the Hall, it was also the busiest weekend to visit.  The crowds were huge, which is understandable, seeing as how Michael Strahan and Andre Reed were two of the inductees.

One of the highlights for me was a fan tailgate party prior to the induction ceremony.  While we didn't meet the inductees themselves, we did meet a lot of their family members.  It's very interesting talking to Andre Reed's older brother about what it was like growing up with a future hall of famer and more interesting still dancing with Derrick Brooks entire extended family.  It's nice to see where these guys are from and how important family is to all of them.

It's also nice to have a wife that isn't a huge football fan so she has no issue with going up to people and asking them if the played the game at all.  Turns out, the best way to introduce yourself to an athlete is by telling them that you have no idea who they are.  Without that, my son would not have had a personal conversation with former NFL quarterback Marc Brunell.  Two lefty football players discussing the nuances of the game.

Of course the main reason that we were there was to watch the players get inducted into the Hall of Fame.  It's easily the highlight of the weekend for most people.  I wasn't sure that my kids would be able to sit through all of the speeches, but they did.  They also quoted their speeches to the players when we met them the next day.

The thing that struck me about each of these guys speeches was that there wasn't much mention of their fathers.  Each and every single one of them had two things to thank; God and their mother.  While dad wasn't completely nonexistent, it was always the talk of their hard working mothers that made the tears flow.  So if you want your kid to be a Hall of Fame athlete, make sure that mom is involved every step of the way.

The game the next day was somewhat inconsequential in comparison to the rest of the weekend.  The only thing that I will remember from it is that it was my kids first pro football game.  I don't even know who won, nor do I care really.  What I care about the most is that my kids soaked up every single moment.

The only problem with the weekend was that when it was over, we had to drive back to New Jersey.  I wasn't looking forward to that drive through Pennsylvania again.  I don't know how in the heck people drive from one end of Texas to the other.  While the scenery is beautiful, sometimes you just need to know that you are in another state.  Carter got so bored with Pennsylvania he fell asleep before we even got home.

Those seat belts have an air bag in them by the way and yes I know that this wasn't the safest way for him to ride, but you can't help when your kid decides that he just wants to sleep... I'm certainly not going to stop him.  Even the Ford Explorer can't help when your kid is having a meltdown somewhere in the Poconos.

I must thank the fine people from the Tri-State Ford dealers for making this trip possible.  It was truly the trip of a lifetime and one that I won't soon forget.  It was also a trip that made my wife a football fan... at least for one weekend anyway.

*Disclosure*
I was provided a 2014 Ford Explorer by the Tri-State Ford Dealers and was compensated for most of our expenses.  All opinions expressed are my own.

A Drawer Full of Teeth

At some point I guess they have to go.

But when?

As it stands right now I have I have nine teeth sitting in my sock drawer in my bedroom.  They will be joined tonight by another one.  Tyler lost another tooth this morning.  Each time it happens now there is less and less fanfare involved.  There were no crazy outbursts like there used to be when he lost a tooth. He simply got a ziploc bag from the kitchen, put the tooth inside and put it under his pillow.

The tooth fairy is coming tonight.

Instead of whisking those teeth off to a far away place, she puts them in my sock drawer.  Then it's up to me to decide what to do with them.  So far I haven't a clue, much like a lot of the stuff I keep from when the kids were little.  Their first hair cuts, their first pair of shoes, even some of my favorite shirts of theirs from when they were babies.

I collect a lot of things.

But why?

Sure all of this stuff might be fun to look back on one day, but I honestly don't know if I will want to.  The thought of being an old man and rummaging through a box of teeth and old shoes might be too much for me to take.  Them getting older is something that I struggle with now, what will it be like in 20 years or even 50 if I'm still alive?

After tonight there will be ten teeth in my drawer.  Since Tyler is almost nine and learning the ways of the world, I don't know how many more teeth the Tooth Fairy will put in there.  One day that phase of our lives will be over.  Then what?

A drawer full of teeth... I might just have to leave them there.

Poop on a Stick

When Tyler was younger he had a fascination with music.

While the music has seemed to fade a little bit, other forms or artistic expression have moved to the forefront.  He really found a passion for drawing and has always been really good at it.  I wouldn't go and say he is Picasso quite yet, but for an eight year old he does seem to have a special ability.  So, while he may never be the athletic star that most fathers want their sons to be, I can totally see him opening art galleries or at the very least selling his artwork on the streets of Rome, and that is pretty cool.

But I have noticed that music has not completely left his sight.  I will catch him singing along in the car to whatever is on the radio.  Yeah his voice is a little pitchy but for a boy you can't really expect much until their voice completely changes (please don't let that happen.)  He will make up songs and run around the house singing them, mostly he just changes a few lyrics to a popular song and calls it his own.  He actually is quite clever.  Then their are other times where he comes up with a song that is completely original and he blows my mind.  I get these songs stuck in my head and the next thing you know I am at the checkout in the grocery store singing the lyrics to his latest "Poop on a Stick."

I suppose we need to work on the lyrics, but for the first try I think it's actually quite good.  Another thing, I didn't realize that Carter was such a drummer.

My kids, rockstars?!

Beautiful Boy... Starring Legos and More

8 years old.

I don't even know how that is possible.  While it seems like yesterday that Tyler came into our lives, in many ways it seems like he has been around forever. It's hard to even imagine life before him. He has been the most awesome kid that any father could ask for. Sweet, loving, smart, funny, you name it Tyler possesses every great quality that every parent dreams about.

He is the best kid I know.

Happy 8th Birthday Tyler.  You truly are one beautiful boy.

Puppy Love?

Could it be that my little Tyler has a little girlfriend?  Or at the very least someone that wants to be his girlfriend?  He has never once mentioned anything of the sort to us and it would completely shock me if he did.  Tyler is a sweet little boy with many great qualities that any little girl would love, but he has always been into things like Star Wars and most recently Ninjago, not really things that appeal to the little girl set.

When he got home from school yesterday I went straight for his home work folder like I normally do.  It was empty except for this little handwritten note. I didn't see what it said at first and when I asked him about it, he took it out of my hands and said it was some project they were working on in school and he proceeded to throw it in the garbage.  Maybe I would believe him, but my kids never throw anything in the garbage, especially that quickly.

Did he actually think that I would leave it at that?

I was intrigued to say the least.  My son comes home with a note and I can't read it?  How do I know what this says?  It could be from the teacher right? Sorry buddy, but if you didn't want me to see it, you should have burned it.  After fishing it out of the garbage can I noticed that it did look like a school project but down at the bottom, there it was:
"I love you, your a little puppy dog! Aleah"
I won't lie to you, for a moment there I was quite proud of the little guy.  Some girl at school named Aleah thought my son was cute enough to say that she loved him.  Maybe it's a little too early to profess her love, but still THAT'S MY BOY!  Maybe my son has all the charm that I lacked with the ladies?  Could this kid really be the big man on campus, something his father never was?  Finally a man in my family that didn't run and hide at the first sight of a girl!  My son, the stud!

Or, maybe not.

It seems as though he is a little too much like me after all.  What do they say about the apple falling from the tree? With a response like that, we might just have to hope Carter can carry on the family name instead.

Wednesday's Window... Two Front Teeth

For some reason it seems to me that kids everywhere are losing their two front teeth just in time for Christmas.  Perfect timing, they can now sing that age old classic song. Tyler is no different, his two front teeth popped out more then a month ago and are showing no signs of coming back in anytime soon.  That's good for us as he can now sing the song himself, he can't whistle though.  I hope enjoy this weeks Wednesday's Window.

Of course this is not the only thing he would like for Christmas, he wants Legos, video games and books.  We'll see what Santa has in store for him.

Wednesday's Window... School Visit

A couple of weeks ago I was fortunate to visit my son Tyler's school for about an hour or so.  I got to see him amongst all his friends and see a brief snippet about what goes on in his day. So far I have been thoroughly impressed with Tyler's teacher Mrs. Boncich, and she has been impressed with Tyler's ability to learn.  He really is a smart little boy, he must take after his mother.  I like going to these events because it not only lets me see Tyler in his classroom it lets me see projects that the kids have been working on, I have to say it's funny reading what these kids can come up with.  Hanging in the back of the room was an assignment that asked the kids to write a descriptive sentence and illustrate it. Pretty interesting stuff.  I hope you enjoy this weeks Wednesday's Window.

This is my son Tyler
It made sense to him, makes no sense to me
I hope I don't run into that monster at the mall
What the hell does it mean
Again with the monsters at the mall
It must have been something they ate
I'm glad the farmer could get away
How the baby got to the moon I don't know
It's always funny seeing what these kids can come up with.  You just never know what they are going to say.

Wednesday's Window

This week's window is a little more special to me than the others in the past.  I have put some amazing, at least I think so anyway, photos on here since I started doing this. This week I am putting a video here, one that I love.  More often than not I record my kids and they are doing something crazy, like trying to kill each other with lightsabres. This week the boys are calm and Tyler is reading, not only to himself but to his brother. There is something sweet about this moment that I will always remember, its really the first time that Tyler has done something like this, and I couldn't be more proud.  I hope you enjoy this weeks Wednesday's Window.

I am sure there will be more moments like this as Tyler gets more comfortable with his reading skills.  It's only a matter of if we can get Carter to sit for long enough to allow him to do so.

Well what about Red Auerbach's nose?

Death to TiVo

He's cute, don't let him fool you
I know this is wrong of me to say this, but TiVo has made my life a living hell.  Now don't get me wrong, I love the DVR, I couldn't live without it, and I really have no idea how I survived watching TV before it existed.  In many ways it's the greatest invention of our time, I mean who really wants to sit through commercials and the annoying parts of reality television.  Just get to the good stuff and lets go. Do I need to see Neil Lane and his overpriced diamonds?  I just want to know who the Bachelorette picks, I know you are with me on that.  Half hour shows are now 22 minutes long.  You don't need me to tell you how awesome it is, or how it works, everyone loves the DVR.

That's a lot of tuna fish
But I have to say it's not all peaches and rose petals though.  My kids have no idea what life was like before this invention, so they only know that they can get their show, whenever they want.   That's fine, but the problem that I am having is that they think everything works that way. They want a piece of candy that I don't have, they think it will magically appear out of thin air.  They want a snack out of the pantry, well they can get anything they want on TV, why not any food that they want. My pantry needs to work as some sort of Digital Food Processor. There is no concept of me not having what they want WHEN THEY WANT IT.

You see what I mean?  Kids nowadays are spoiled.

Snow was even on the TVs
I fear that the DVR is slowly becoming this generations walk to school. How may times have we heard the story from an older relative about walking to school uphill both ways in knee deep snow.  By the way did you not learn anything in school?  You could have just walked through Mrs. Johnson's yard and cut that walk in half.  But you see where I am coming from, we had a lot to endure when we were kids: knobs on our TVs disguised as furniture, things called rabbit ears, and the VCR.  Now the VCR was only used is special occasions like watching the Bad News Bears or Smokey and the Bandit and the only thing that was ever recorded on it was Professional bowling.  That left us watching whatever was on the Glass Sandwich of Love at the time we wanted to watch it.  So I was forced to watch Quantum Leap at 8:00 on Wednesday.  One time per week and that was it!  I know, I was a loser, but somehow I survived.

Could you even imagine kids nowadays having to suffer the torment that we went through?

Oh, what we had to go through
This all brings me to my point. With things like DVR's, Netflix, and On Demand, we get what we want NOW. They want Johnny Test, poof there he is with his Turbo Charged Backpack.  Phineas and Ferb? Certainly.  What about Scooby Doo?  Sure here he is with his meddling friends.  What could be worse for kids nowadays then being forced to wait for something?  Could you even imagine your kid coming up to you asking for milk, and having to tell them that you don't get any until Thursday at 8:00?  I mean when I was a kid if I wanted milk I had to go find the nearest cow, and milk it.  In the snow no less.

This Little Piggy (Bank)

This little piggy gets emptied
We have been waiting for this day for some time, over five years actually.  It was time to empty Tyler's Piggy Bank.  It had been sitting in his room on his dresser, gone almost unnoticed over that span of time.  Stacks of clothes and stuffed animals buried the poor little guy, but his day finally came.  Five years worth of coins were going to get a new home, it was time for this little piggy to go to the bank.

We're gonna be rich
Fortunately for us there is a bank near our house that counted up all the money for us.  I mean really who has the time to roll up all of these coins.  My dad said I was nuts to pay a six percent processing fee, but figuring this would easily take a couple of hours to do I was more than happy to pay someone else.  I guess it could have been a good moment for me and the boys to count up the money together, but since one of them can't count past five, and the other loses interest depending on what is on TV, I figured LET THE BANK DO IT.

The boys were just as excited as I was when we got to the bank.  They have this little "Penny Arcade"  that you dump the money into, and when its all done it spits out a receipt with the amount of money that you get, pretty simple.  I don't know how much of the money the machine eats for itself, they could easily take out an extra twenty dollars and I would have no idea, but banks would never take more money from us than they say they will right?  No way.  Banks are honest and our friends.  At least this one seemed to be anyway.  They had lollipops for the boys, that just screams honesty (or a subtle way to say that we are all suckers.)

This is after, it was too heavy to lift
This bank was not the easiest thing to empty.  I felt kind of weird sticking my finger in the pigs hole, see that does sound weird doesn't it?  Anyway, coins were stuffed in there a little to tightly as they took forever to come out.  I did find a bunch of paper money and also found my car keys that I had lost four years ago so that was a bonus.  The sound of the arcade was comparable to that of a slot machine paying out a huge jackpot.  I actually don't know what that would sound like as I never win on the slots, but I imagine this is what it would sound like if I do ever win.  As the money poured out of the pig and into the machine my boys could hardly contain their excitement.  Every cha ching meant they could buy something bigger and bigger.

That's a lot of coins
When it was all over we had over $247.00. I have to say that is not a bad haul, considering this was five years in the making.  I know that this should be a moment where I sit the boys down and teach them a lessen about finances, but in all honesty I would have no idea what I'm talking about.  Sure we could put the money in the bank but really what good is it going to do there.  Interest rates are horrible and the money just isn't going to grow like it did when I was a kid.  I mean I was getting somewhere like 14% interest on my money back when I was there age, so it kind of made sense to put the money in the back, even though I probably would have liked to buy a stomper or a Colecovision game.  The only thing that makes sense now is to SPEND IT.  And what did we spend it on?  We bought legos of course.

What would you have done with the money?  Spend it?  Save it?  Give it to charity? Leave me a comment below.
