My Son is a Swinger

Life it seems began in a swing

Every now and then my sons do something out of the blue that just amazes me. From Carter it's usually a new long word like actually or figuring out how to play a video game. Tyler usually amazes me with his memory, I swear that if there is a kid that would remember his birth it would be him. Today it was something completely different, something that changes our lives forever. One of those true signs that he is getting to be a really big kid, he figured out how to swing on his own.

Tyler of course is almost seven years old and I am sure there are a lot of kids that are younger than him that have figured out how to pump on a swing. This is something that I have been trying to get him to do for years with no luck. Even last week at the playground he still needed my wife or I to push him. Was he just sandbagging, knowing that if we didn't push him anymore we wouldn't spend as much time with him? I don't know but it certainly changes trips to the park a lot.

It's weird, I always want my kids to start doing things on their own but am never fully prepared for when they do, it's one step closer to the day that they no longer need my help, with anything. There will be things I won't miss like wiping their butts after they go to the bathroom or when they completely push me off my bed when they run into my room in the middle of the night, but a simple thing like a swing might take a little time to get over. We want our kids to grow up, but when they finally do we wish they could stay a kid forever.

I know there will always be things he will need my help with, I am his dad after all, and hopefully he will be one too someday. Now that Tyler knows how to swing, I need to move from behind him where I have been pushing for him to grow up. It's time to grab the swing next to him and enjoy the ride, while I have a chance.

  1. But will he be swinging to the oldies in 2074?

  3. I think it is always bitter sweet when the kids start doing things on their own! I love seeing their growth but some times I wish they needed me like they used to.

  4. I think there is a period where we lose our kids, but it seems they all come back. I know that it was that way with me and my parents. I checked out for most of my teen years through college and then realized that I needed my parents as I got older.
